I stole this from The Oatmeal

Unless you've been living under a rock (a rock with no wifi) then you already know about SOPA and its partner PIPA. You know they are bad. You know they can break the internet. You know they can nuke my web site.

So please, if you have not already, contact your elected representatives and tell them to jam SOPA / PIPA right where they belong.

The most troubling provision in PIPA and SOPA that hasn’t received a lot of attention is the “vigilante” provision, which would grant broad immunity to all service providers if they overblock innocent users or block sites voluntarily with no judicial oversight at all. The standard for immunity is incredibly low and the potential for abuse is off the charts. Intermediaries only need to act “in good faith” and base their decision “on credible evidence” to receive immunity.

This provision would allow the MPAA and RIAA to create literal blacklists of sites they want censored. Intermediaries will find themselves under pressure to act to avoid court orders, creating a vehicle for corporations to censor sites—even those in the U.S.—without any legal oversight. And as Public Knowledge has pointed out, not only can this provision be used for bogus copyright claims that are protected by fair use, but large corporations can take advantage of it to stamp out emerging competitors and skirt anti-trust laws:

For instance, an Internet service provider could block DNS requests for a website offering online video that competed with its cable television offerings, based upon “credible evidence” that the site was, in its own estimation, promoting its use for infringement....While the amendment requires that the action be taken in good faith, the blocked site now bears the burden of proving either its innocence or the bad faith of its accuser in order to be unblocked.

This isn't an issue that breaks down along party lines. Out here in California, Boxer and Feinstein are for it, while Thompson is against it. All are DEMS.

Here, let me make it easy for you

1/16/2012  - This is absolutely wonderful. Vika Yermolyeva (aka vkgoeswild), is a classical pianist who plays metal, punk, and anything else that makes her happy. While simple, rocking stuff like While Ace of Spades is pretty fun, it's the System Of A Down/Metalica/Nine Inch Nails songs that really shine. Take a listen. Watch a couple of videos. Down load some MP3's. And if you like what you hear, pay the lady a few Euros.

1/11/2012  - THIS JUST IN! Bear, the follow-up to crowd-favorite short "Spider" from director Nash Edgerton and Blue-Tongue Films, will be screening at the BoneBat "Comedy of Horrors" Film Fest 2012! See 'em both together on the big screen this April!

1/5/2012  - After arguing about cereal, a 19-year-old man set himself on fire in front of his family and died.

Detroit Police, firefighters and arson investigators responded to the home after reports that the man was on fire. The incident happened at a home on St. Aubin and Nevada in Detroit. Police say the 19-year-old had an argument with his sister over cereal.

The man's mother stepped in to take the sister's side. Investigators say that's when the man went downstairs, doused himself in lighter fluid and came back upstairs. He apparently lit himself on fire by the stove in front of his siblings. Relatives performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he died.

The man had no known mental issues, but did have a physical disability (um... BESIDES being on fire? - gord).

12/31/2011  - I decided to slip in one last toon before the new year starts. Do you want the back-story behind this cartoon? Of course you do. First of all, it is not an original idea. I saw THIS map of Texas, and sent it to my Texan friend. (I don't know who the artist is who made that map, but I'll gladly credit them if they let me know). About ten minutes later, I drew my own map and emailed it to him. Really, this 'toon was made for an audience of one. I send my friends all kinds of goofy pictures, and this was no different. But then I showed it to my lovely wife, and she laughed and laughed. That's not a reaction I usually get from her, so I figured I'd pass it on to y'all. Have an excellent 2012, people.

12/28/2011  - Here's a pretty wonderful example of customer service hubris, from a guy who probably can't spell "hubris."

And here's the fallout.

12/27/2011  - Hey, if you experience some weird stuff on my site, just remain calm. Everything is cool. Just avert your eyes and come back later. We're messing around with the site's innards this week, and things might get ugly.

12/23/2011  - Is it just me, or is making Ender's Game into a movie an utterly horrific idea?

````````````````````````````````````````
On the other hand Prometheus looks badass. I don't know what it is or what it's about, but I'm pretty sure I have to see it.
12/22/2011  - Oh, Obama.
12/19/2011  - Playable Angry Birds Christmas lights? Sure! Why not.
